- Poliomyelitis is an infection that is caused by the polio virus and resides in the intestinal tract and in mucus in the nose and throat. Most cases cause no symptoms in their hosts. However, symptomatic disease can present as either abortive polio, non-paralytic polio, or paralytic polio.
