- There are two types of the polio vaccine, one is an inactivated vaccine (doesn't contain any live virus) and the other contains a diminished version of the polio virus.
- An inactivated polio vaccine began to be distributed in America in 1955 and by 1960, there were only 3,000 reported cases. In 1961, the diminished version of the virus began to be distributed orally. The oral vaccine on rare occasions, however, caused paralytic polio and so it was stopped from being given in 2000.
- There is no cure if polio is contracted, however. Measures can be taken only to relieve the discomfort that results from the virus.
